A day off work can help refresh your body and mind

I recently attended a FIRST networking event, hosted by the lovely Bridge Club  in January where there was lots of talk (and writing down) of New Year Business Resolutions. A fantastic idea was to write yours down and have your picture taken with your resolution, with the aim to take it home, pin it up on the wall and stick to it!

Mine was ‘Focus’.

What I really like about running my own design and marketing business is that I get to work on what I want to work on client-wise and love the variety in my work, so I’m never bored. Running your own business, many business owners can quite easily get distracted on the ‘job in hand’ by little things like emails, social media, phone calls, ever-growing ‘to do’ lists, finance, the list goes on and on. So I thought I’d share my top 5 tips on how to stay focused in your work:

1. Have a priority to do list and stick to it. if anything new comes up, add it to the bottom of the list and make sure you start your list with the jobs you like least and build up to the nice work.

2. Stick your headphones and listen to some music if you need some inspiration. I often find it’s great if I need to be creative and it’s good to block out distractions.

3. Have a social media break – don’t be on twitter all day if you have to write some copy or have some finance work to do. You might get what I call Twitter envy, when you start to look at other peoples’ tweets thinking they have a more exciting job/business/life than you when you have a task you need to do which might not be fun!

4. Take a day off through the week or if you can’t, make sure you have regular breaks and do something that takes your mind off work. Try something new like a ski-ing lesson or even a nice long walk in the fresh air. Even weekends get so busy lately, like me you probably need some “down time”.

5. Don’t try to do everything at once. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so make sure you have a plan and stick to it and don’t get overwhelmed (just add it to the list).
