Thanks to Abi Moffat from Parakeat for this month’s guest blog post. Another good business to come from a University graduate…

What is Parakeat?

Parakeat appParakeat is a FREE mobile app that encourages users to dine in independent cafes, restaurants and bars. We help users discover the awesome independents in Newcastle that offer great food and the best ambience by taking the uncertainty out of independent dining, allowing users to filter by their own requirements including dietary needs (vegan, gluten free, halal) facility requirements (disabled access, wifi, plug sockets), cuisines or pricing.

To further incentivise independent dining, and encourage users away from the high street chains, we offer users discounts when using the app, discounts varying between establishment while also allowing users to rate and review establishments, or favour them for later!

We believe the only way to encourage people to favour independents over national chains is by showing them the best independent dining has to offer. For this reason we carefully select which independents are marketed on the mobile app, ensuring they offer great service, food and ambience.

Best of all? We market the independents completely free!

How did it all begin?

After working with independent eateries throughout her time as an undergraduate and postgraduate student at Newcastle University founder, Abi Moffat, became increasingly concerned at the amount of great independent restaurants closing due to lack of footfall. After talking to students and locals she discovered that the greatest problems for many of the independence was simply a lack of awareness, people didn’t know they were there and didn’t know what they were offering and were often disappointed to hear they had missed their opportunity to visit.

After carrying out some research and finding that the average 20-35 year old dines out 30 times a month (yes, really!), she realised that more had to be done to encourage these people into independents.

With the current market trends showing that more independents are opening than ever before, while dinners are actively seeking out independents due to increasing disappointment in the high street chains today is the day to join our #IndieTribe and download Parakeat.

What now?

After launching a beta version of the app over the summer, and testing it with both users and eateries the app was refined to offer the services people required most, filtering, ratings and discounts. Now we are launching publicly helping everyone to find ‘hidden gems’ and to Dine Off The Eaten Track.

If you are a foodie, in hospitality, work for a local group or independent please get in touch we would love to have a chat:
