Returning to work for a large ad agency after my first child, my old boss was struggling to find me a role within their organisation which could accommodate my part time hours – going back to being an Account Director was a full time job (of which I was not working full time hours).  So, one important question I had to ask myself was “Am I a hunter or a farmer?” so I could start my role in sales.

Hunter being : highly active in going out and seeking new business and bringing it back in.

Farmer being: not as good at bring out new business from scratch, but excellent at building ongoing relationships.

I’d always thought myself as a great farmer, good at managing multi-million pound clients and their advertising accounts(mainly with existing clients I knew well). I never actually realised that I was really good at sales (I managed to do it in a very friendly, less pushy way within my previous role).

So, I decided from that moment to start my career in new business as a hunter, hammering the phones, working on new business strategy and helping my agency win pitches for new work. After a while bringing in new business for another advertising agency, I thought if I can do it for them I can do it for my own company.

Hence we started actively looking for and working for our own clients at Vicki Stone Marketing.

So when clients come to us asking for help with their telemarketing, we try to find out what they enjoy or hate about sales. Most clients are great when they get in front of their potential new customer and just need some lead generation for meetings with prospects and help with their networking strategy.

Some clients are in fact ‘hunters’ but might not have the time and perhaps don’t like sales, so for these clients we help them develop their telemarketing strategy and prospect lists.
